Single stereo ceiling speakers reproduce both left and right audio channels from one discreet speaker. They are ideal for bathrooms, en-suites, hallways, dressing rooms and small kitchens where there is not enough ceiling space for a conventional pair.

When Should You Choose a Single Stereo Ceiling Speaker?

A single stereo speaker is usually the best choice for a smaller room of up to approximately 10 square metres, or wherever two separate speakers would need to be positioned too close together. Installed near the centre of the room, one speaker can provide more even coverage with only one ceiling cut-out.

If the speaker will be installed in a bathroom or another humid area, choose a suitable water-resistant ceiling speaker and check its IP rating before installation.

How Do Single Stereo Ceiling Speakers Work?

Also known as dual-tweeter or dual-voice-coil ceiling speakers, these models contain connections for both the left and right amplifier channels. Most use two tweeters for the separate channels and a shared bass driver, allowing both sides of a stereo recording to be heard from one speaker position.

The sound still comes from a single location, so the stereo image will not be as wide as it would be from two properly spaced speakers. However, in a compact room, a single stereo speaker is often the neater and more practical solution.

Wiring and Amplifier Requirements

Although only one speaker is fitted, most passive single stereo models require two speaker-cable runs, one for the left channel and one for the right. You can use two lengths of two-core speaker cable or one suitable four-core cable.

You will also need a compatible ceiling speaker amplifier. A 6.5-inch model is suitable for most small rooms, while an 8-inch speaker can provide greater bass and output where ceiling space allows.
